The textile world
In 2019, the Netherlands discarded or exported 554 kilotonnes of textiles. Together with Moniek Wijsman and Fleur Donkers, We created an interactive installation that confronts visitors with the reality of clothing waste. Through a world built entirely from it.
Concept: We constructed a surrealist world made from unsellable, discarded clothing. From the outside it looks inviting and playful. But step inside and hidden texts reveal the dark reality of textile pollution. Pick up the phone and you hear real facts about the impact of fast fashion. The contrast between the visual appeal and the confronting message is intentional: it draws people in before making them think.
Outside the installation: We hung wearable second-hand clothing for visitors to take home for free. Turning the experience into a direct call to action.
My role: My background in styling shaped the visual identity of the installation. From the way the discarded clothing was arranged to the overall atmosphere of the world we built. I'm often drawn to surrealism as a source of inspiration, and this project gave me the opportunity to apply that directly: using unexpected combinations and distorted reality to make visitors look twice and think deeper.
Result An immersive installation that educates through experience, using surrealism not as a style but as a strategy to raise awareness about textile waste and inspire more conscious choices.
